American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick is a man who is unafraid to stand up for what he believes and to rail against injustice. In 2016 he made headlines by refusing to stand during the U.S. national anthem before the start of NFL games in protest at what he felt was racial injustice in the U.S. His actions had a polarizing effect, with many other NFL players and athletes following his lead and either kneeling during or raising their fist during the anthem, while other criticised his behaviour. Kaepernick opted out of his contract with 49ers at the end of the 2016 season, but during 2017 he wasn’t offered a new contract with any other team. This has resulted in Kaepernick filing a grievance against NFL and its owners, levelling the accusation that they have colluded to block him being hired. Respect is due to Kaepernick for tackling an issue that is bigger than football and challenging the continued persistence of racism in the U.S.
