It might have came in for a little criticism for being a touch on the alarmist side, but American journalist David Wallace Wells’ article ‘The Uninhabitable Earth’ in New York sparked widespread and necessary debate on climate change. Published in July of 2017, the article quickly became the most widely read article in the history of New York and took on a viral life of its own. The feature posits on a worst-case scenario for global warming, and depicts a dystopian vision of the future. Some detractors felt that inspiring fear in people in this way is counter-productive, but Wallace-Wells feeling is that the risk of scaring people too much is less than the risk of not scaring them enough. We’re on his side.
